Protein S Free and Total

Order Code: PRSFT

Test Summary

Protein S is a vitamin K dependent protein, cofactor of activated Protein C. Protein S deficiencies can be both acquired and hereditary which are associated with increased risk of thrombosis. Total and Free Protein S are antigenic determinations of quantity and functionality. Patients usually have a positive family history of thromboembolic events with early onset. Arterial forms of thrombosis, thrombotic strokes and peripheral artery occlusion may be present. Acquired Protein S deficiencies occur during pregnancy, oral contraception, oral anticoagulant therapies, liver failure and nephrotic syndrome.
