Qualitative test to aid in the detection of a platelet dysfunction due to P2Y12 drug ingestion as well as a functional assay to determine if patient sample is within therapeutic range for prescribed antiplatelet drug therapies such as Plavix.

Preferred Specimen

Discard tube required before drawing. Two Greiner 3.2% Sodium Citrate (light blue top) 2.7 ml partial fill tubes. Vacuette blue cap tubes have a white inner ring on top of a dark gray stopper. Vacuette blue caps tubes also display a large arrow (►) on the side of the test tube to indicate the partial fill line.

Minimum Volume

Discard tube required THEN 2 Greiner vacuette 3.2 % Sodium Citrated blue cap 2.0 mL partial fill tubes.

Instructions

Use a 20 or 21 gauge needle.

Draw 3.2 % sodium citrated light blue top tube discard tube first followed by 2 Greiner vacuette 2.7 ml blue top tubes.

Mix 5 times after collection.

Once mixed immediately place blue top tubes into gray foam tube holder strip and maintain standing upright at all times at room temperature.

Patient Preparation

Storage

Maintain samples standing upright at all times at room temperature. Avoid shaking.
Samples must be delivered to MVH lab within 3 hours of collection.

Transport Temperature

Room Temperature in provided container.

  • 4 hours

Limitations

5 mL blood discard needed in an arm with in-dwelling line or port.

Unacceptable Specimens

Rejected for hemolysis, clotted, improper fill, incorrect specimen type, frozen or centrifuged,refrigerated blood, expired test tubes, > 4 hours post collection, sent through pneumatic tube system.
