Estimation of Fetal Blood

Test Summary

Stain for fetal hemoglobin is to be done when a positive fetal screening test is obtained, or when the infant born to the D-negative mother has weak D-positive phenotype. The percentage of fetal cells in maternal blood is used to calculate the approximate volume of fetal maternal hemorrhage and the number of vials of Rh (D) Immune Globulin indicated. A stain for fetal hemoglobin may be ordered by the physician for cases of suspected trauma to a pregnant patient.
