Test Summary

Factor II (prothrombin) is synthesized in the liver and is Vitamin K dependent. Hereditary deficiencies, especially autosomal recessive traits are rare. Genetic variants have been reported. Liver disease in heterozygous and homozygous patients experience bleeding from mucous membranes and after trauma or surgery. Acquired deficiencies occur with warfarin therapy, prolonged antibiotic therapy, Vitamin K deficiency, malabsorption syndrome and liver disease.
