Group B Strep PCR Reflex

Test Summary

The PCR methodology allows for rapid detection of Group B Streptococcus colonization in pregnant women. Preventative antibiotics can be used during childbirth. This can decrease the risk of delivering a preterm low-birthweight infant and decrease the mortality rate of these infants. This test detects Group B Streptococcus DNA by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of the GBS Amp gene.
