Test Summary
Use this test code for the second collected sample. Diseases caused by human parasites remain on a worldwide basis among the principle causes of morbidity and mortality. Correct diagnosis of intestinal parasitic infection depends on proper collection, transport, detection and identification of parasites in stool specimens. Symptoms range from malaise to death. Treatment is dependent upon examining multiple stool exams due to erratic shred rates of some parasites. PARASITES MAY INVADE ALL BODY TISSUES; THEREFORE, ALL TYPES OF SPECIMENS MAY NEED TO BE EVALUATED. THE CHOICE OF SPECIMEN DEPENDS UPON THE SUSPECTED PARASITE OR CATEGORY OF PARASITES. SPECIMENS ARE SCREENED FOR INTESTINAL PARASITES IN THIS PROCEDURE. WHEN NEGATIVE RESULTS ARE OBTAINED FOR FECAL SAMPLES, IF CLINICALLY INDICATED, OTHER SPECIMEN TYPES SHOULD BE EVALUATED. SCHISTOSOMA MAY BE PRESENT IN URINE SAMPLES. SIGMOIDSCOPIC MATERIAL AND LIVER ASPIRATES MAY PRESENT AMOEBAS. SPUTUM MAY PRESENT OVA. INTERFERING SUBSTANCES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: 1) BISMUTH OR BARIUM (WAIT 7-10 DAYS) 2) ANTIMICROBIAL AGENTS (WAIT 2-3 WEEKS) 3) GALLBLADDER DYE (WAIT 3 WEEKS)

Specimen Collection
Preferred Specimen
Random Stool specimen in Ova Parasite transport vial. (Pink and Blue lids). (minimum Ratio of 1 part feces: 3 parts preservative: 1 gram of fresh specimen). 24 hour urine acceptable for schistosomes
Instructions
ROUTINE INSTRUCTIONS: 1) COLLECT A STOOL SPECIMEN IN A CONTAINER. DO NOT IMMERSE SPECIMEN IN WATER. 2) ALIQUOT A PORTION OF THE SPECIMEN INTO EACH TRANSPORT TUBE TO THE RED LINE INDICATED ON THE LABEL. SELECT THE BLOODY, SLIMY, OR WATERY PARTS OF THE SPECIMEN WITH WOODEN STICKS OR A PASTEUR PIPETTE TO ALIQUOT. 3) LABEL EACH TUBE AND INDICATE SUSPECTED ORGANISM IF KNOWN, THE PATIENT'S CLINICAL HISTORY. i.e., RECENT TRAVEL LOCATIONS, ACUTE OR CHRONIC SYMPTOMS PREVIOUS PARASITIC INFECTIONS. 5) OTHER RELATED TESTS ARE OFFERED BY THE LABORATORY = PINWORM EXAMINATION, STANDARD O&P THAT LOOKS FOR GIARDIA AND CRYPTOSPORIDIUM.
Patient Preparation
Patient should not have a barium enema at least 10 days prior to collection.
