Group B Streptococci can be one of the most significant pathogens in the neonatal period. The organism is transmitted to the newborn through the birth canal. Prepartum vaginal and anorectal cultures are important to determine carriage.

1 culture swab, usually from vaginal, cervical, or rectal source. A combined vaginal/rectal is preferred.

Instructions
Indicate source. Current recommendations are to collect a vaginal and rectal sample on the same swab. 1. Cervix: Do not use lubricant during procedure. Wipe the cervix clean of vaginal secretions and mucus. Rotate a sterile swab, and obtain exudate from the endocervical glands. If no exudate is seen, insert a sterile swab into the endocervical canal, and rotate the swab. 2. Vaginal Secretions: Use a speculum without lubricant. Collect secretions from the mucosa high in the vaginal canal with sterile pipette or swab. 3. Rectal: The swab is inserted 1 to 1.5 inches into the anal canal and is rotated firmly as it is being pulled out of the canal.
