Test Summary
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a small, non-enveloped, double-stranded DNA virus, with a genome of approximately 8000 nucleotides. There are more than 140 different HPV genotypes3,4and approximately 40 different genotypes can infect the human anogenital mucosa.5,6 Fourteen HPV genotypes are classified as carcinogenic or high-risk (HR): 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 66, 68. Please note that one of these, HPV66, was recently categorized as “possibly carcinogenic” based on its relatively low prevalence in invasive cervical carcinomas.
