Protein Electrophoresis, with Total Protein and Serum Immunofixation.
Serum protein electrophoresis (SPE) is an analytical technique used to separate serum proteins into six fractions: Albumin, Alpha-1, Alpha-2, Beta-1, Beta-2, and Gamma. Evaluation of increased, decreased, or abnormal protein fraction patterns provides diagnostic information for a variety of conditions, including inflammatory disorders, liver disease, nephrotic syndrome, immune deficiencies, and monoclonal gammopathies (MG). Serum immunofixation electrophoresis (IFE) is performed to identify and characterize monoclonal immunoglobulins (M-proteins) detected by electrophoresis, aiding in the diagnosis and monitoring of plasma cell and lymphoproliferative disorders such as multiple myeloma, Waldenström macroglobulinemia, and monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS).
