Bacterial sepsis constitutes one of the most serious infectious diseases. The detection of microorganisms in a patient's blood has importance in the diagnosis and prognosis of endocarditis, septicemia, or chronic bacteremia.

Aliases

  • Blood Culture

Specimen Collection

Special Instructions

N/A

Preferred Specimen

Number of cultures: 2 - 3 separate sets (each set consisting of 2 10mL bottles) should be collected (collection of only a single blood culture set will miss approximately 20% of the cases detected with 3 culture sets). Adults - 20 mL (8 -10 mL per bottle)

Minimum Volume

8-10 mL in blood culture bottle.

Instructions

Blood (venous or arterial) 1. Prepare the site using an iodophor, betadine, or chlorhexidine; Similarly, wipe the rubber diaphragm on the blood culture bottles. 2.
