Gentamicin, Peak

Test Summary

Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used in the treatment of gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial infections, especially Pseudomonas, Proteus, Klebsiella and Staphylococcus. Gentamicin is potentially nephrotoxic and ototoxic. Serial monitoring of peak and trough serum levels may provide the clinician with information to maintain safe and therapeutic levels.

Instructions

Collect 30 minutes after the completion of a 30 minute IV infusion or 1 hour after an IM injection.
If the patient is also receiving penicillin's and/or cephalosporins, separate and freeze serum if testing will not be completed within 8 hours. Avoid hemolysis. Invert a minimum of 5 times then allow to clot in an upright position for 60 minutes. Centrifuge the tube for at least 10 minutes. Transfer to a plastic transport tube.
