Test Summary
The pap smear is a screening test used to diagnose premalignant and malignant changes in the uterine cervix and vagina and to diagnose genital infections such as herpesvirus, Candida, Trichomonas vaginalis, etc.
Screening pap test - intended for routine pap screening.
Diagnostic pap test - intended for follow up pap after a previous abnormal result.

Limitations
The pap test is a screening test subject to both false positive and false negative interpretations. Failure to obtain adequate ectocervical, endocervical or vaginal cell population is suboptimal for evaluation. Excessive use of lubricating jelly on the vaginal speculum will interfere with cytologic examination and may lead to unsatisfactory Pap results. Patient should avoid use of douches and personal lubricants 48 to 72 hours prior to examination. Specimen should not be collected during or shortly after menstrual period.
