Cysticercus Antibody (IgG), Western Blot, Serum
Test Summary
This assay is a qualitative test for the confirmation of specific IgG antibodies recognizing Taenia Solium, the agent causing Cysticercosis. Detection of antibodies to any 6 specific T.solium glycoprotein bands of molecular weight 50, 42-39, 24, 21, 18, and 14 kilodaltons is interpreted as a positive result. However, a positive result without reac- tivity to the 50 and 42-39 glycoprotein bands may reflect cross-reactive antibodies induced by Echinococcus.

Interpretive Criteria

Detection of antibodies to any of 6 specific T. solium glycoprotein bands of molecular weights 50, 42-39, 24, 21, 18, and 14 kilodaltons is interpreted as a positive result. However, a positive result without reactivity to the 50 and 42-39 glycoprotein bands may reflect cross-reactive antibodies induced by echinococcosis.
A negative test result does not exclude the diagnosis of neurocysticercosis, particularly if only a single brain lesion is present. The sensitivity increases from 50% or less for a solitary brain cyst to greater than 90% if 3 or more cysts are present.
Interpretive Criteria
Negative | None of 6 specific bands detected |
Positive | One or more of 6 specific bands detected |
