Stone Analysis
Test Summary
Stone analysis is used in determining the etiology of stones. The results are often useful in determining the cause and treatment.
Aliases
- Calculus Analysis
Specimen Collection
Special Instructions
N/A
Preferred Specimen
Dry stone(s) collected in a sterile screw-cap container
Minimum Volume
N/A
Instructions
- Clean any blood or foreign material from the stone with water.
- Stone should be air dried thoroughly at room temperature for approximately 24 hours. A dry stone should not stick to the walls of the plastic container.
- Important: Do not tape specimen; Do not send stone in formalin, surgical gel, or any transport media; Avoid sending filters and cotton swabs (Q-tips)
- Additional processing is required for stones received with residual liquid or dampness, potentially causing delays in testing.
- In cases for multiple stones that require individual analysis, testing must be ordered for each stone and will be charged separately. Each stone should be placed in its own plastic container.
- Indicate source of specimen on outside of container (e.g., left kidney, bladder, right ureter).
